FAQs - Great Oaks Care Home - Bournemouth

Q: What type of care do you offer?

At Great Oaks Care Home we offer residential, dementia, nursing, respite and palliative care.

To discuss the care requirements for yourself or a friend or family member please do call us on 01202 087444 to arrange a visit and we would be happy to discuss any care needs with you.

Q: How will you help me settle in?

We know how important a warm welcome is for a new resident, who may be feeling unsure about moving into a care home, so we do all we can to help our residents settle in as quickly as possible.

All our caring team will introduce themselves on day one and we will quickly get to know our new resident’s likes, dislikes and how they like to spend their time. We will ensure that every individual is given a full tour of the home so that they can become familiar with their new surroundings. As soon as they wish, they will be introduced to others at the home so they can begin socialising and joining in activities.

All residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with furniture, pictures and special objects and decorations to make their rooms feel more comfortable and home-like.

We check in regularly with any new resident to ensure we can promptly address any issues or needs and ensure they are happy and thriving at Great Oaks.

This comprehensive approach helps new residents feel safe, welcomed and part of the Great Oaks family.

Q: Can I bring my pet?

We can accommodate pets in some cases, please do discuss this further with our Home Manager.

Q: How will I spend my time at Great Oaks Care Home?

Our residents spend their time as they please. Great Oaks has a structured yet flexible routine that includes mealtimes and a variety of stimulating activities offered throughout the day.

Breakfast can be had in the communal dining areas or in our residents’ rooms. Following this, residents often choose to socialise or take part in some of the activities on offer. These include exercise classes, arts and crafts sessions, visiting entertainers and gardening club. All these are designed to promote physical health and mental wellbeing.

Those who prefer a slightly quieter morning enjoy reading, doing puzzles in the lounge or going for leisurely walks in the garden. The activities coordinators ensure that each resident’s preferences and abilities are considered and that there is something that appeals to everyone.

After lunch and into the evening there are further activities such as music therapy, film screenings or games like bingo held in the communal areas. For those who are keen, we organise outings to local attractions or shopping trips, providing residents with a change of scene and the chance to engage with the local community.

Our daily routine is designed to ensure residents remain active, engaged, and socially connected, contributing to their overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Q: What is the food like?

Food at Great Oaks is varied and delicious. Our onsite catering team ensures that we provide nutritious, balanced meals that respond to the dietary needs and preferences of our residents.

Residents can expect a menu that includes locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy products. We regularly produce crowd-pleasers such as roast dinner and fish and chips, as well as more unusual dishes like Asian curries and Caribbean chicken. Puddings of course are a priority and are always popular at Great Oaks.

Residents can enjoy their food in a comfortable and welcoming environment in the communal dining areas, or if they prefer, they can dine in their rooms. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day.
